Support Proposed Pharmacy Rule! Come Join Us at a Public Hearing in Urbana!
What: Public Hearing on New Pharmacy Refusal Rule
When: Wednesday, May 31, 2006 12 pm to 2 pm
Where: Urbana City Council Building 400 S. Vine, Urbana
Last year Governor Rod Blagojevich proposed and implemented a rule that requires pharmacies in Illinois that stock contraceptives to dispense those medications without delay. This action was in response to numerous incidents in which women were refused lawful prescriptions for contraception at some pharmacies in Illinois.
However, some women and medical providers still encounter hassles when they attempt to have a prescription for contraception filled. In at least one instance the pharmacy staff misled a prescriber and told her that the medication was out of stock when it actually was available at the store at that time.
To make it clear that last year's rule must be enforced and followed, the Governor has proposed another rule regarding a pharmacy's duty to dispense contraceptives. This new rule requires that pharmacies post information on the rights of individuals to have prescriptions for contraceptives filled. The Governor wants to make sure that each customer knows her rights so that she will not be deterred by hassles at the pharmacy counter.
We are urging area individuals to show their support for this new rule by attending a public hearing held by the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation and, if you wish, give testimony supporting this move. For further information on testifying or general questions, please contact Brigid Leahy, Vice President of the Illinois Planned Parenthood Council, at 217/522-6776.
